Manchester University releases MAVERIK:
a free Open Source Virtual Reality system
=========================================
Press Release
=============
The Advanced Interfaces Group, in the Department of Computer Science at the
University of Manchester, UK, announces the release of MAVERIK, a new
software system for supporting Virtual Reality applications.
Maverik is free, Open Source software released under the GNU Public
Licence, and is released with full source code, documentation and example
programs.

WHAT IS MAVERIK?
================
MAVERIK (http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik/) is a system for managing
graphics and interaction in Virtual Reality applications. It is designed to
address the challenges of highly interactive virtual environments
containing many objects with complex geometry. MAVERIK uses the Silicon
Graphics Inc. OpenGL graphics library, and is supported on SGI workstations,
and PCs running the Linux operating system. Porting to other OpenGL
platforms is straightforward.
EXAMPLES
========
Visit the MAVERIK Applications Gallery
(http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik/gallery.html) for examples of
MAVERIK applications.
WHY MAVERIK IS NOVEL
====================
MAVERIK dispenses with a separate representation for application data.
Conventional VR systems need to import data into their own format, but
MAVERIK avoids this by making use of the application's own internal data
structures. This has two important benefits:
1) MAVERIK can easily take advantage of optimisations that are highly
application-specific, intimately tied to knowledge that the application
has.
2) MAVERIK can far more readily adapt (dynamically) to a wide range of
application demands. Its flexible design means that applications with
widely differing requirements can be supported.
THE MAVERIK ARCHITECTURE
========================
MAVERIK has two main parts:
1) The MAVERIK micro-kernel implements a set of core services, and a
framework that applications can use to build complete virtual
environments and virtual reality interfaces.
2) The MAVERIK supporting modules contain default methods for optimised
display management including culling, spatial management, interaction
and navigation, and control of VR input and output devices. MAVERIK's
structure allows these default methods to be customised to operate
directly on application data, so that optimal representations and
algorithms can be employed.
RELATED WORK
============
MAVERIK provides the tools for a single user to perceive, interact with,
and navigate around, a graphically complex Virtual Environment. It is
designed to integrate seamlessly with the experimental Deva system
(http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Deva/) which provides for the higher level
needs of VR: namely multiple-participants, multiple VEs with laws and
behaviours, and a coherent framework for interworking between them. There
are plans to release Deva at a later date.

Subject: mcl 0.50.00 - MUD client for Linux
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 01:45:23 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
mcl - MUD Client for Linux
mcl is a MUD client running under a Virtual Console in Linux. It uses
direct VC access via the /dev/vcsa devices, allowing for a speedy
screen update on the slowest machine. This, however, allows it only to
be run under Linux and only under a virtual console.
New in version 0.50.00 - Embedded Perl!
This is a major upgrade which includes embedded Perl capability.
Through this a lot of new functionality is available - take a look at
the modules that are written in Perl that are distributed with mcl.
You can create perl subroutines that are called when new input
arrives, when some time has passed, when you have entered a line on
the keyboard or even after each keypress.
Included with mcl are Perl plugins that can perform spellchecking on all
messages you send over certain channels, tab completion, highlight of certain
strings, gagging of lines, blanking out profanity and more.
Availability
Source and binary (glibc 2.0.x, x86) binary is available from
http://www.andreasen.org/mcl/
Other features of mcl:
* Color scrollback buffer, the size of which is limited only by
available memory.
* Telnet GA support - prompt and input line are at the bottom, and
the prompt is not displayed in the main window.
* Command history - press arrow up to get a window with the last
commands which you can scroll through using standard navigation
keys.
* Aliases - tintin style, multiple commands per alias, aliases can
call other aliases.
* Automatic login - specify commands to be run on connect to remote
server (e.g. name and password).
* Stable ANSI color code support: if an ANSI color code is received
broken in two packets (as it often happens to me on a color-heavy
MUD on a PPP connection) the color code is reassembled and
displayed correctly.
* Windows that display output from commands (e.g. traceroute,
finger).
* Windows that you can print to using built-in commands: useful for
e.g. logging all tells to a separate window.
* Actions using regular expressions as well as substitutions using
Perl's powerful regexp library
* Macro keys - key e.g. Keypad 8 to send "north"
* User interface is fairly configurable (done using a text file).

I maintain the site:
http://www.angband.org/linux
it's a simple page trying to inform people about the different
distributions of linux out there. the only problem is that it is in need
of a drastic update.
i had to sell my computer recently because of financial needs (damn
tuition!), so i haven't had the chance to play around with any of the
new releases. i would really appreciate it if people who have installed
and used the new releases, send me some feedback.
you can e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
please submit your e-mail in the following format so i can organize it
easily:
Subject: <distribution version> (e.g. RedHat 5.2)
message body:
pros: blah blah blah.
cons: blah blah blah.
comments: blah blah blah.
if you have any particular rant that you want posted, let me know and
i'll put it up there for you.
as usual, i will properly credit anyone who sends me feedback. then
again, please don't take it the wrong way if i don't put your comments
up there, there is only so much information i can put on one webpage
regarding a particular distirbution.
hopefully, if i get enough feedback in time, i will update the webpage
by the beginning of march.
once again, thanks.

Subject: lpe-1.0 - a console-mode text editor
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 02:12:45 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Lpe is a very lightweight editor designed for programming but usable for
plenty of other things. Its characteristic trademarks are an almost
complete lack of extraneous "flashy" features, a unique "edit the source
code" method of customization, and a minimalist feel that I find very
appealing. It's also designed to run on a very wide variety of terminal
types without glitches and be as robust as possible. And if you're into
distribution disks, the stripped binary is less than 20K in size. Lpe
supports localized messages in either English or Russian as a
compile-time option, and translations to other languages are really easy
to do and are being actively solicited.
For all you lpe users who may have felt left out for a month or two, I
now have version 1.0 available! In traditional lpe style, there aren't
a lot of changes because there isn't a lot to the program anyway... most
of them relate to cleaning up the code and build system and fixing a few
stupid mistakes on my part. More importantly though, this release is
the result of quite a bit of testing and housekeeping, and is my
personal certification that you probably won't die or suffer other
horrible fates if you use lpe.
You can get lpe by anonymous FTP to walker2-74.reshall.ou.edu in the
'lpe' subdirectory.
