The installfest site at http://www.installfest.com
now has a list of about 21 upcoming or periodic
Installfests or other gatherings around the world
where you can bring your computer and get help
installing Linux.

The site also has general info about Installfests,
and a few tips on running successful Installfests.

Most of the site can be added to by users, so if you
know of any Installfests or other hands-on gatherings,
please drop on by and add them yourself.

The site comes to you courtesy of the Sillicon
Valley Linux Users Group and VA Research.
Suggestions are welcome; please email me if you have any.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the release of "Xplns" version 3.0, free
astronomy simulation software written specifically for Unix. It
reproduces real starry sky on your display of X Window System.
It calculates the position of many celestial objects accurately.
You can enjoy the past and future sky on the desk top as if you
have traveled all around the world.

I used commercial source code provided by AstroArts Inc., so this
software is released in binary executable form only.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 22:30:31 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Red Hat and Metrowerks Deliver Mainstream Development Tools for Linux

Red Hat Linux Positioned for Next Wave of Growth

Research Triangle Park, N.C, and Austin, Texas--March 29, 1999- Red Hat(r)
Software, Inc., the leading provider of Linux software and expertise, and
Metrowerks, Inc., (NASDAQ: MTWKF, TSE:MWK), a leading supplier of software
development tools for telecom, desktop, embedded systems, and consumer
electronics announced today that CodeWarrior(r) software development tools
have been ported to the Red Hat Linux operating system. This agreement to
bring commercial development tools to Linux is the latest in a series of
applications that enhance the viability of the Linux OS.

"Our work with Metrowerks helps to accelerate the adoption of Linux in the
enterprise market," said Bob Young, CEO, Red Hat Software. "By making
CodeWarrior's user-friendly development tools available, we will attract a
broad base of software developers writing applications for the Red Hat
platform."

An Industry First
Metrowerks' CodeWarrior is the first widely used, commercially available
Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to be ported to Red Hat Linux.
This comprehensive and integrated set of tools includes editors, browsers,
project management facilities, compilers, debuggers and other development
tools within a powerful and easy-to-use graphical development
environment. The increased productivity provided by the CodeWarrior IDE
reduces the time-to-market for all developers of third party
applications. Those developers already using CodeWarrior on other
platforms can adopt Red Hat Linux as their new platform without needing to
learn a new tool set.

"Red Hat Software has been a leader in open source software solutions.
The combination of Red Hat and CodeWarrior responds to the demand from the
developer community for mainstream, commercial software development tools
for Red Hat Linux," said Jean Belanger, chairman and CEO, Metrowerks.

One veteran user of CodeWarrior technology at National Instruments, Rob
Dye, noted the importance of the combination of CodeWarrior with Linux:
"As a longtime CodeWarrior user, I'm looking forward to having CodeWarrior
for Red Hat Linux. We recently released LabVIEW for Linux, and see Linux
as an increasingly important platform. CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux will
be a welcome addition to our toolset."

Pricing and Availability
The companies will release two separate products. CodeWarrior for Red Hat
Linux, GNU Edition, targets native Linux applications development using
the CodeWarrior IDE and the GNU compiler and debugger technology.
CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux, Professional Edition, will support Linux
development using integrated compilers and debuggers from Metrowerks.

Orders are being taken today for the initial release of CodeWarrior for
Red Hat Linux, GNU Edition, which will begin shipping in May. Priced at
US$99, the product will include the CodeWarrior IDE using a GNU compiler
and debugger. Orders may be placed via the Metrowerks website at
www.metrowerks.com, by phone to Metrowerks at 800-377-5416, or by email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] For pricing and availability outside the USA,
please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Distributors and resellers are
listed on www.metrowerks.com/buy.

CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux, Professional Edition, will become available
during the fourth calendar quarter of 1999. This advanced product, priced
at US$449, includes integrated compilers and debuggers from Metrowerks for
C, C++, and Java.

The companies have entered into a distribution agreement by which Red Hat
Software will provide CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux on a standalone basis,
and will bundle and distribute CodeWarrior for Red Hat Linux with the Red
Hat version of the Linux operating system. Product support will be
available from Metrowerks.

Subject: Siag Office 3.1.8 released
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 22:51:08 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Siag Office 3.1.8 is the latest version of the free office package
which consists of the spreadsheet Siag, the word processor PW
and the animation program Egon.

Siag is easy to use, yet infinitely flexible through multiple
embedded interpreters and a plugin mechanism that allows other
programs to run inside the main document. The supported interpreters
are SIOD, Guile, Tcl and Python.

Changes from version 3.1.7 include:

 - T1lib can be used to add fully scalable Type 1 fonts with kerning,
   ligatures, antialiasing and other features not usually found in
   X applications. Existing fonts can be leveraged and new ones
   easily installed without modifying X or installing "font servers".

 - Patch from Stephen Eglen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: when a file
   is saved, show its name in the status bar.

 - One-line fix in buffer.c to avoid accessing previously freed
   pointer. Thanks to S. Lockwood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

 - TextField widget incorrectly discarded Tab characters, which
   made it impossible to load tab separated files. Discovered by
   Stephen Eglen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Kernel 2.2.* Denial of Service Vunerability

The 2.2.3 kernel release has been found vunerable to DoS attacks. There are

ADM Worm. Worm for Linux x86 found in wild.

Ben Cantrick reported this nasty little bug. The ADM Worm is capable of
portscanning, wiping logs and other typical worm characteristics. In
addition, the worm looks for any file with the .html suffix and overwrites
the file with "The ADM Inet w0rm is here !" Apparently the worm was
discovered on a Intel box running Red Hat 5.2, but it is unlikely that the
vunerability is limited to only that distribution.

All server software that uses SSLeay or versions of OpenSSL prior to version

From: Steven Flintham <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Z81 v1.1 (ZX81 and ZX80 emulator) uploaded
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 22:04:12 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

[I (Russell Marks) don't have net access, but Steven has been kind
enough to upload/post on my behalf.]

Z81 is a Sinclair ZX81 emulator. (The US equivalent was the Timex
TS1000.) The ZX80 can also be emulated. There are actually three
versions - Z81 (svgalib), xz81 (for X), and Z81txt (for any text-mode
Linux console - it'll even work on MDA/CGA/EGA).

Changes in v1.1:

- - xz81 should support pretty much all display depths now. At any rate,
  it works for me at 1/8/15/16/24/32 bpp; 4-bit should work, but is
  currently untested.

- - There's an important bugfix relating to glibc - previously it
  wouldn't have compiled!

- - There are a few bugfixes in the emulation, meaning that a couple of
  games which didn't work before (e.g. Artic's "ZX Galaxians") do now.
  Thanks to Claudio Carlquist for pointing out one of these bugs.

- - Z81 now uses svgalib's raw keyboard support rather than rawkey.

- - I'm including yet another naff ZX81 PD game I wrote :-) - `mine81',
  a minesweeper clone.

Here's the LSM entry:

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin3
Title:          Z81
Version:        1.1
Entered-date:   11MAR99
Description:    Z81/Z81txt/xz81 are ZX81 (TS1000) and ZX80 emulators
                for (respectively) svgalib, text mode, and X. They
                load/save Xtender-format .P files, and support the
                ZX81's pseudo-hi-res mode. A few ZX81-related utils,
                GIFs of the keyboard layout, two PD tetris clones,
                a PD minesweeper clone, and a pear tree are included.
                (Just add partridge.)

                Though I (rjm) wrote Z81 etc., I give Ian main author
                credit as I used his Z80 emulation (from his excellent
                `xz80' ZX Spectrum emulator), which is the most
                difficult bit, not to mention being half the code. :-)
                (Please don't contact Ian in relation to Z81; I just
                used his code, he wasn't otherwise involved. The email
                address below is given only for completeness, and
                might be out of date.)

Subject: arts-0.3.0 - analog realtime synthesizer
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 21:58:57 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

aRts 0.3.0 is released.

What is it?
- ------------
aRts is an analog realtime synthesizer which is completely modular. You can
create sounds & music (realtime midi synthesis) using small modules like
oscillators for creating waveforms, various filters, modules for playing
data on your speakers, mixers, faders,... You can build your complete setup
with the gui of the system under KDE.

The aRts server is controlled via CORBA. This design is intended to let
other applications use aRts as synthesizer (or filter provider) and
working together in the creation of music.

Requirements:
- -------------

mico, KDE

Changes since arts-0.2.6:
- -------------------------

  :: major performance improvements ::

  - ArtsBuilder AutoRouting is now a lot more usable (faster, more
    responsive): now uses a second thread; some optimizations on the
    init of the routing are also new.

  - Internal flowsystem changed, this means aRts is *a lot faster* now,
    sometimes factors of 3-5 are realistic!!

  :: midi synthesis rewritten, new structural elements ::

  - Publishing structures and retrieving back from server.

  - Structure interfaces.

  - New dynamic midi synthesis (instruments are just instiated and removed
    on the fly, as the midi events come in... well: read the docs :).

  :: major documentation improvements ::

  - The whole documentation is now available as SGML and in the online
    help of artsbuilder.

  - All modules are documented.

  - There is a tutorial.

  :: new modules ::

  - Synth_PLAY_WAV module to play simple wav files (currently requires
    libaudiofile though).

  - New filter (SHELVE_CUTOFF) added, extremely useful when using
    Synth_WAVE_TRI oscillators.

  - Synth_CDELAY for constant delay (require less cpu time and work
    with recursive loops in the new flow system style).

  :: improved CORBA interface ::

  - New functions due to publishing and retrieving structure definition
    (see advanced midi synthesis).

  - Debugging is now runtime configurable (aRts simply performs better
    without printing debugging infos all the time ;).

  - Lots of other stuff (Cycles, RingBuffer sizes,...) is also runtime
    configurable (use artsshell to do so).

  - Some more Informations about resource usage are exported via CORBA.
    (Number of active modules, number of buffers/bytes in buffers etc).

  :: small fixes ::

  - Icons will now be installed with arts and loaded.

  - Fixed compilation issues with some egcs releases (so SuSE 6.0 users
    should finally be able to compile it again).
