I've written a C++ program called Xplanet which is similar to xearth,
but draws the earth with user supplied maps. It renders the image
into the root window for the current position of the earth and sun.
Both mercator and orthographic projections can be drawn, and clouds
can be optionally overlaid.
I've run it on Debian 2.1 and RedHat 5.2 i386 systems, and also gotten
it to work (but not too well) on a Sun Ultra running Solaris 7.
More details, screenshots, and source code can be found at
http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~hari/xplanet
This is the first release, so any comments or suggestions are welcome!

Subject: Speech output for Linux, Speakup version 0.06 released.
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 20:23:32 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing the sixth alpha release, speakup v-0.06
Speakup is a screen review package for the Linux operating system. It
allows you to hear all output directed to the console and move around
the screen using the typical screen review functions.
This is an alpha release which means it is by no means complete. It
only supports the Double Talk internal synthesizer currently, but
hopefully we will increase it's variety of synths in the not to
distant future.
It is quite usable in it's current incarnation though, with the
blaring lack of cursor output support. That means in an editor it
doesn't read each line as you move up and down the screen. It tracks
the cursor so you just need to do a say current line but it doesn't do
it all by itself. There is more to be said for cursor tracking and
speaking than meets the ear at first glance.
Speakup is a set of kernel patches which means you should have some
experience with kernel compiling. It currently works on the Linux
development kernels 2.1.125 and above. At this release we are at
kernel 2.2.7.
What's new in v-0.06? Read the Changes file included in the tar
archive for full descriptions of my changes. Speakup now has
accompanying utilities for loading and dumping its configuration
settings. Speakup has a totally new device driver mechanism which
reduces the size of the driver code. There is also new punctuation
support code to make the punctuation across synths consistant.
Speakup now has character repeat code to make listening to long
strings of repeated characters more tolerable.
There is a mailing list for speakup which you are welcome to join if
you are interested in it's on going development. You can subscribe to
the mailing list by sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
a line in the body of the message like this:
subscribe speakup (YourFirstName YourLastName)
The mailing list is currently a very low traffic forum so you probably
won't be overwhelmed with mail.
The official speakup distribution point is
ftp://ftp.braille.uwo.ca/pub/speakup. The ftp area includes all of
the current speakup files and utilities. It also includes a
subdirectory containing older versions of speakup. There is a new
directory tree which contains the base debian installation disks with
speakup already installed. So if you have a doubleTalk card you can
down load the disk images and install your entire system with speech.
The installation disks currently contain speakup version-0.06. There
is also a Linux kernel image "linux" which contains speakup and the
drivers usually included in the Debian kernels.
We are in the middle of writing a set of web pages for speakup. You
can check them out at http://www.braille.uwo.ca/speakup. We would
like to hear what you think of them and will gladly consider
recommendations on their improvement.
Speakup is written by Kirk Reiser and Andy Berdan. It is covered by
the GPL (GNU Public License).
So, like I think that's about it. If you have any questions feel free
to write me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you have a DoubleTalk internal
synth, we could really use your feedback. If you are just diing to
get involved in a software project, boy do we have a bridge to sell
you! 'grin'

Announcing Slush
- ----------------
Slush is a project to create a simple and secure remote shell
application using SSL/TLS for communication security and X509 for
authentication. Slush is based on the excellent stunnel program.
The ultimate goal of Slush is to create a free and superior
replacement for SSH using open protocols and source code. Slush uses
the SSLeay or OpenSSL libraries for the TLS and X509 components.
Slush itself is released under a GPL license.
Current Status
- --------------
A lot of functionality remains to be implemented before this goal can
be reached. Currently Slush consists of a functional client and server
with several limitations:
- - Only X509 authentication is supported (i.e no passwords)
- - Terminal window size changes are not reported to the server
- - Needs documentation

File1 = suck-4.2.0.tar.gz
INTRODUCTION
============
The primary use for suck is to feed a local NNTP server, without the
remote NNTP feeding you articles. It is designed for a small, partial
news feed. It is NOT designed to feed 10,000 groups and 3 Gigs of articles
a day.
This package contains software for copying news from an NNTP server to your
local machine, and copying replies back up to an NNTP server. It works
with most standard NNTP servers, including INN, CNEWS, DNEWS, and typhoon.
The suck/rpost combination allows you to run your own site, controlling
where you get your news, and where you post outgoing articles. Suck/rpost
use only standard NNTP commands that are used by your favorite news reader
(tin, xvnews, strn) such as POST and ARTICLE. If you can use tin or xvnews
against a NNTP site, than you can use Suck/Rpost.
suck Pull a small newsfeed from an NNTP server
lpost Gives one article fetched by suck to the local server.
rpost Posts article(s) to a remote NNTP server
testhost Check to see what commands your host recognizes or
get the active or new list.
lmove put articles in news/group/number format.
MAJOR CHANGES FROM 4.1.2 -> 4.2.0
* suck - added new option -i. This option allows you to set the default
number of articles to download when using the -A or -AL option
and a new group is added.
* suck - fixed bug in reconnect option to handle restart and 0 messages
correctly.
* suck - added new option, -Z to enable the use of XOVER vice XHDR to
retrieve the Message-IDs. This is for servers (such as mindspring)
that don't support the XHDR command.
* suck - added the ability to use PROGRAM= and PERL= into xoverview kill
files. See the man page for more details, as there are some things
you need to take into account.

You can now buy (only buy) antimatter and hull (repair).
Buying and selling will be an easy add but I'm waiting untill

Check out starbase 902 in the included database, don't connect
with .89 to any of the online servers, they haven't been updated yet.
The new version should also be compatable with YIFF .33!
The eco products will show up in the 'ex' command when you examine
an object that has economy products.
There are also three new commands, `ecoprodcreate', `ecoprodset', and
`ecoprodedlete'. You'll be using them to create and delete products.
Follow the standards set on Starbase 902 for now.
(Note, product names are not case sensitive).

set <object_name>=eco/flags:OPEN
set <object_name>=eco/flags:BUY_OK
set <object_name>=eco/flags:SELL_OK
You can remove a flag by putting a ! infront of the flag's name like:

Subject: x10_lib V1.2 - API for the CM11A home appliance system
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 19:59:34 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi all !
This is just to announce a new version of x10_lib: V1.2.
X10_lib is a free (GPL) API for the CM11A home appliance system,
for Linux.
This is basically a bug and omissions fix release, as stated in the README:
V1.0: - initial release.
V1.1:
- added a reply to the 0xa5 poll from the interface, in case
of a power failure. We now set the interface time. Thanks to
Stephen O Lidie for pointing this out.
V1.2:
- now handle correctly (I hope) pathological cases where the
checksum of a command is 0xa5 or 0x5a which are polling codes.
I really hate hardware engineers which think software engineers
are just here to patch their approximate work ;-)
- now, x10_listen_to_events() awaits for an X10 function before
terminating to avoid blocking.

suit: n. 1. Ugly and uncomfortable `business clothing' often worn by
non-hackers. Invariably worn with a `tie', a strangulation device
that partially cuts off the blood supply to the brain. It is thought
that this explains much about the behavior of suit-wearers.
