Subject: Audio-Quality HOWTO
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 20:27:14 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Dear Linux audio enthusiasts,

I have started work on a proposed HOWTO focusing on getting good-quality
sound on a Linux box. The focus is on PCM (digital audio), not MIDI.
Hopefully this will be of use to musicians and others who want to get
the most out of their hardware under Linux.

There is already much useful information in the current draft (version
0.0.3), including:

- --Reducing soundcard noise (hardware and software tips)
- --Preventing dropouts in recordings
- --Links to drivers and soundcard reviews
- --Full duplex recording

More information is needed on the following topics:

- --Support for digital input and output
- --Support for multichannel soundcards (e.g. more than 2 simultaneous
inputs and/or outputs)

This HOWTO might be a separate HOWTO (or mini-HOWTO), or, as Jeff
Tranter has suggested, it might be merged into the existing Sound-HOWTO.
Opinions on the best home for this information are welcome.

The draft lives at:

Changes:

Rewrote several sections, built up several others, added a lot more tools.
The SQUID section is now complete, the "administrative tools" now covers
items such as sudo, yast, ssh and so forth, and there is a section (not
complete) on automating software updates and the like (I didn't finish the
section on apt soon enough, sorry to all you debian folks =).
One new section is planned for 0.1.0 but everything between now and 0.1.0
will be 'bugfixes' with no new major additions (anticipated anyways). 0.1.0
will be available on Monday, March 31st.

Hi everyone,

The Worcester (MA, USA) Linux Users' Group (WLUG) would like to announce
that its next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at
7:00 PM. The meeting location is the usual place, that is, Kinnicutt
Hall in Salisbury Labs on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA. This meeting
is open to the public.

At this meeting, we'll be discussing the happenings from Linux Expo in
North Carolina, opening the floor to the normal Q/A, raffling off a few
items, and possibly a short system administration talk on runlevels and
the /etc/inittab file. Other unplanned topics will also undoubtedly be
discussed - depending on the questions and interest of those in
attendance. Light refreshments will be available at the meeting.

After the meeting, we'll be taking a trip to a local restaurant for some
food and drink.

All people interested in Linux are most welcome to attend! We've had 30
- - 50 people in attendance for the last few meetings - let's see if we
can't break that record! See ya there...

         Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 2CDROM set ----> UKP 5.00 per set.

         Linux-Mandrake 5.3 ------> UKP 3.00 each.

These CDROMs include an El Torito boot record, which, on supported hardware
make them bootable.

The Red Hat CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the Red Hat
updates to that time on the CD. Rather than having them in a separate
updates directory, we have opted to make them part of the install, so you
automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.

A large amount of extra software has been included on the CDROM, including
Corel WordPerfect (downloadable version) and Sun JDK 1.1.7 (for the
programmers out there).

A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Red Hat
Linux is just too big now to have all the binaries and sources on the one
CD. This CD is also available, also for UKP 3.00.

The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD
distribution.

For more information, and how to order, please visit the web page at:

        http://www.amush.cx/linux/

International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.

Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank. International bank transfers accepted,
however subject to a UKP 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a
UKP 1.50 charge for postage and packaging within the UK, variable for
international customers.

From: Andreas Beck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: LibGGI Beta 2.1 released
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 20:50:04 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announce: LibGGI 2.0 BETA2.1 (the Renoir update) is out.
- --------------------------------------------------------

The first maintenance release for LibGGI Beta 2 is out.

Note, that starting with Beta1 LibGGI consists of a library doing generic
input handling called LibGII, and the "traditional" LibGGI, which takes care
for handling graphical output to virtually anything used to display
graphics on Linux or Unix in general.

And _NO_ - you don't need to patch your kernel to use it.

For those that have waited for just that announcement - here is where you
can get it:

ftp://ftp.ggi-project.org/pub/ggi/ggi/current/

If you are unsure, if you should upgrade, please check the Changelog at
the end of this mail.

For those who don't yet know, what LibGGI is about and why you want it
as well:

LibGGI is an attempt to unify all those graphical output systems that exist
on Unix (and we even want to port to other systems as well).

Linux alone has a pretty big set of graphics output subsystems:

X, SVGAlib, /dev/fb (native or kgicon), LibAA, Glide, XF86-DGA, etc. ...

LibGGI is an attempt to unify all of them. It is a very fast, simple (ever
tried to make a small graphics app directly in Xlib ?) and lightweight
interface layer, that allows you to run the _very_same_binary_ on all the
above mentioned targets (as we call them). LibGGI will detect (or you can
select, of course) the environment you are running in, and redirect its
output as required. Forget about limiting yourself to just one graphics
subsystem and just use LibGGI.

LibGII is a companion lib (required version for the current LibGGI is 0.6),
that was developed because most programs producing graphical output will
require input as well.
In LibGGI 1.0, LibGII was integrated with LibGGI, but we found that it is
more flexible to separate it out. This enables you to add your favorite
device to the available input devices of nicely written LibGGI programs,
and you can use it. The author of the program doesn't even know your
device exists. At worst, you can make it emulate a mouse.
And yes, even if you don't want to use LibGGI, you might still find
LibGII useful. It is completely independent of it and can be used
standalone.

As there are quite a bunch of SVGAlib applications out there, while there
are many systems that can't use them due to the lack of drivers, we
decided to make an SVGAlib wrapper as well. This is an SVGAlib-look-alike,
which internally uses LibGGI. This allows you to run many SVGAlib programs
via LibGGI and make them display on your X server, for example.

Moreover we have a new version of XGGI, which features:

+ Better support to use it as drop-in-replacement for XF86
+ Some keyboard fixes
- - Multihead support
- - No modelines needed
- - Runs on all GGI targets that offer a suitable DirectBuffer. That is it
  replaces the servers for fbcon, Xnest, Xvfb with a single executable and
  brings a few new things like running X on SVGAlib.
- - No root priviledges required for most targets
- - Support for 8/15/16/24/32 bit modes
- - Accelerated (when running on accelerated LibGGI target)
- - Small (binary is 1.4MB)

Other goodies:

LibGGI features several "pseudo-targets", that allow for nifty effects:
- - "multi" allows you to display the same application on multiple targets.
Very nice for remote demonstrations.
- - "tile" allows to cut a big virtual graphics area into a bunch of tiles,
that can be sent to different targets. Can you say video-wall ?
- - "trueemu" allows to run "bad" applications that insist on running
truecolor on other bitdepth visuals.
- - "palemu" does the same for palette-loving apps.
- - "shmem" target that allows for the legendary "cube3d" demo, which will
take up to 6 LibGGI applications and display them on the faces of a
rotateable cube. Start 6 nixterms on there and feel like the guys in one
of those science fiction movies :-).

Performance:

Wrappers aren't always slow. We took great care to optimize things, and we
actually do support acceleration, where available.
Or as one our developers puts it: You might want to mention squake running
on svgalib-wrapper running on LibGGI running on X gives about the same
framerate as squake running on SVGAlib directly on the gfxhw ;)

Applications:

LibGGI has attracted quite some ports of interesting programs. Available
titles include Descent (the first port, that was known to natively run on
Linux/Alpha), DOOM and DUMB, Xmame, Phorus, Crystal Space, XGGI (an X
server running on top of GGI - this unifies Xfb, Xnest, Xvfb, ...) and
many many more.

A note to developers:

We strongly believe that the API is stable now. We added almost nothing
compared to Beta2, so it seems to be good. The last points that itched
are probably fixed, so the exported functionality is expected to be
stable. Hack away.

Changes from Beta 1:

LibGII:
* Portability fixes for non-Linux platforms.
* Misc bugfixes (see ChangeLog).
* Minor documentation updates.
* New API function giiQueryDeviceInfoByNumber().
* New GII_EV_TARGET_QUEUE value for "target" in giiSendEvent().
* Thread fixes for event queues - now it's possible to have one thread
  block with giiEventPoll/Read, feed events with giiSendEvent() from another
  thread, and have the first thread unblock.
* Fixes and improvements for the cleanup stuff in LibGG.

* input-linux-kbd
  - Fixed to compile on pre 2.2 kernels.
  - Pressing dead key+space now works properly.

LibGGI:
* Autoconf now checks for headers as well as libraries for Glide, AAlib and
  SVGAlib.
* Should now compile on Linux libc5 and other systems which doesn't define
  MAP_FAILED.

* cube3d-demo fixed to work on GT_32BIT visuals.
* demo-demo - teaches how to properly use ASYNC/SYNC mode better now.

* fbdev-target
  - Now supports acceleration on non-kgicon matroxfb, too.
  - Read /etc/fb.modes to get timing information - mode switching now
    works for non-KGIcon drivers too.
  - Fixed bug when running on a new VT (like XGGI does by default).
  - Don't try to change the palette when the application is switched away.
  - Now compiles on 2.0 kernels - someone with the proper hardware please
    test whether it actually works.
* svgalib-target
  - Major updates and bugfixes.
  - Now supports running in the background using the GGICMD_NOHALT_ON_UNMPAP
    standard API.
  - Console switching now works, but does _not_ use SIGUSR* - you can now use
    the SVGAlib target with pthreads!

XGGI:
* Better for drop-in-replacing XF86
* Some small kbd glitches fixed, better german keymap.

Have fun with it !

Subject: Announcing Magick++ 0.8.2 image-processing library
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:33:50 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Magick++ is a sophisticated portable C++ application programming
interface (API) to the ImageMagick image processing library (libMagick).
Magick++ currently provides access to 65 major image processing
operations. This count does not include the many options (some of which
could be considered operations themselves) available to those
operations. Magick++ is able to read and write a huge number of image
and file formats due to its use of ImageMagick.

The Magick++ C++ API to ImageMagiMagick++ is co-packaged (in a
sub-directory) of ImageMagick 4.2.5 so that compatibility is ensured.
Read more about Magick++ (including full documentation and source
release) on the Web at "http://www.cyberramp.net/~bfriesen/Magick++/".

Magick++ supports an simple object model which is inspired by the
PERL interface to ImageMagick (PerlMagick). Unlike some other
C++-based image processing libraries Magick++ is not a
incomprehensible explosion of inherited classes. Magick++ executes
quickly since it is written in a compiled language which is not
parsed at run-time. This makes it suitable for Web CGI programs.
Images support implicit reference counting so that copy
constructors and assignment incur almost no cost. The cost of
actually copying an image (if necessary) is done just before
modification and this copy is managed automatically by Magick++.
De-referenced copies are automatically deleted. The image objects
support value (rather than pointer) semantics so it is trivial to
support multiple generations of an image in memory at one time.

Magick++ provides integrated support for STL. This support allows
Magick++ to be used with the Standard Template Library (STL) so that the
powerful containers available (e.g. vector and list) can be used to
write programs similar to those possible with PERL & PerlMagick.
STL-compatable template versions of ImageMagick's list-style operations
are provided so that operations may be performed on multiple images
stored in STL containers.

Obtain Magick++ by downloading the ImageMagick 4.2.5 release (Unix
source release or NT binary+source release) from
ftp://ftp.wizards.dupont.com/pub/ImageMagick/ or one of its many mirrors.

Title: Magick++ image processing library (in C++)
Version:        0.8.2
Entered-date:   18MAY99
Description: Magick++ is a library written in C++ that provides
                a user-friendly interface to the sophisticated
                image-processing capabilities of ImageMagick. Magick++
                supports an object model and API which is inspired by
                PerlMagick, the PERL interface to ImageMagick. Magick++
                provides reference-based garbage collection and
                efficient value-based assignment to make working with
                images no more difficult than working with integers.
                Pointers are not a requirement in order to use Magick++.
                In order to deal with collections of image frames,
                Magick++ is fully integrated with the Standard Template
                Library (STL) so that image frames may be stored in, and
                operated on, in STL containers (e.g. vector and list).
                STL-compatable template versions of ImageMagick's
                list-style operations are provided so that operations
                may be performed on multiple images stored in STL
                containers. Magick++ is platform independent (only
                requiring standard C++) and is currently supported under
                Unix and Windows.
