Subject: arts-0.3.1 - analog realtime synthesizer
Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 14:35:30 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

aRts 0.3.1 is released.

What is it?
- ------------
aRts is an analog realtime synthesizer which is completely modular. You can
create sounds & music (realtime midi synthesis) using small modules like
oscillators for creating waveforms, various filters, modules for playing
data on your speakers, mixers, faders,... You can build your complete setup
with the gui of the system under KDE.

The aRts server is controlled via CORBA. This design is intended to let
other applications use aRts as synthesizer (or filter provider) and
working together in the creation of music.

Requirements:
- -------------

mico, KDE

Changes since arts-0.3.1:
- -------------------------

  - Implemented using structures inside structures (thus using structures
    as modules).

  - GUI elements now possible (though this is alpha code), artsbuilder
    now runs as server.

  - Bugfix: NaN bug: when the cutoff filter (Synth_SHELVE_CUTOFF) got a too
high clipping frequency (> SampleRate/2) it started producing NaNs and
    crashed the whole synthesizer.

  - Bugfix: crash when Synth_BUS_DOWNLINK objects were terminated doesn't
    occur anymore

  - New module: Synth_ATAN_SATURATE - which can be used to get an input
signal of any size to the range from -1..1. (simply atan).

32-bit), Win32, OS/2 and Linux RPM (i386-libc5, i386-libc6,
alpha-libc6, and sparc-libc6).

In addition, the source distribution should at some point be available

.... and the DOS and Windows source/binary distributions become
available at ftp.simtel.net.

Also, the NASM web page hasn't been updated yet; I presume that will

San Jose, CA, June 2, 1999 --
Linux Laptops Ltd. has announced it is now open for business at
  http://linuxlaptops.com

Linux Laptops sells portable computers pre-loaded with the
reliable Linux operating system. The company aims to relieve
customers' uncertainty about which portable computer models
can work well with Linux, and free them from the chore of
installing and configuring the software.

Laptop computer features such as power management and PC-Card
slots have only limited support in most CD-ROM Linux distributions.
Worse, many laptop computer models have built-in devices that
aren't supported at all in Linux. As a result, to get Linux
running on a laptop is harder than on a desktop or server
machine.

"People put off buying a laptop to run Linux because it's
risky," says Nathan Myers, the company's president. "It's hard
to choose an up-to-date machine that is fully supported, and
then it's a big job to get everything set up."

Myers sees buying a professionally-configured Linux Laptops
computer as a convenient and stress-free way to get instantly
up and running all the best software the Free Software movement
has to offer.
