=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

JX 1.1.23 (the latest cutting-edge version) is now available.

The major new feature is configurable button toolbars, as demonstrated in
Code Crusader, Arrow, etc. This is provided by the new JToolBar library
written by Glenn Bach.

Thanks to the following people for porting JX:

  FreeBSD    Dave Chang
  IRIX Geoffrey Simms, Aaron Lefohn, Isaac Stoddard,
             and the others on the Code Crusader mailing list

The source distributions can be downloaded from:

  http://www.its.caltech.edu/~jafl/jx/download.html
  ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/libs/X/c++libs/

- ----------

Description:

JX is a full-featured C++ application framework and GUI class library for
X. The power of JX stems from its rich feature set and extensibility which
support all aspects of professional quality application development.

The features built into JX include a generic messaging system to support
the Model-View-Controller paradigm, document management and interaction,
Drag-And-Drop, 3D graphics, networking (e.g. INET and UNIX sockets), the
ability to connect to multiple X displays, a powerful word processor class,
very extensive table support, background tasks, and seamlessly integrated
postscript printing.

This rich feature set does not impede the extensibility of the system,
however. The base class for all GUI objects, the Widget, provides
mechanisms for supporting all of the actions and interactions that are
expected in today's commercial applications. In addition, it is easy to
derive customized classes from almost any class in the library, from the
base Widget class to specialized classes such as Tables and Menus.

JX is designed to make it easy to construct commercial quality
applications. All the common, required functionality is built in, so
developers need only connect the standard components together and then
develop custom Widgets that are unique to their particular applications.

More information about JX is available at:

  http://www.its.caltech.edu/~jafl/jx/

To subscribe to the mailing list, send email to:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and include "subscribe jx" in the body of the message.

License:

JX is free for non-commercial use and is pretty close to Open Source.
Details of the license are available at:

  http://www.its.caltech.edu/~jafl/sypp/

- ----------

JX is very close to providing the same feature set as the awe-inspiring
Galaxy application framework, our source is available, and we're free for
non-commercial use and a lot cheaper than Galaxy for commercial
development! We're not yet cross-platform, but we have begun work on the
Windows 95/98/NT port. If you are interested in how a particular feature
of Galaxy is provided by JX, please contact us.

IndexOS is a directory of continuously updated news, real-time
discussions, web site links and a search engine. It features news and
resources for almost 100 alternative operating systems and a special
section to keep an eye on the Evil Empire.

IndexOS news and discussion are highly integrated with the web
directory. News articles are classified by topic into specific
categories within the directory. The articles are then pushed up to
more general categories. This allows our users to filter news very
specifically. A user interested in web programming under Linux can go
to the Linux:Web:Programming category and find news about just that.
A user interested in just Linux will see these stories, since they are
about Linux, and many more.

IndexOS features the IndexOS News Spider that collects news summaries
from online news sites. Each summary includes headlines and excerpts
for all the different takes on the same story and links to related
articles. The News Spider uses an HTML parser that fixes broken HTML
and allows it to see web pages as a human would. You can read about
the News Spider on

IndexOS was developed and is operated by Joel Peterson, working under
the guise of Odin Properties, a division of Odin Consulting, Inc. It
features the coolest technology of any web portal, with over 115,000
lines of Java and C++ code running on Linux. Over 40,000 lines of
this code are available as an Open Source C++ class library under the
LGPL.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Andreas Klemm)
Subject: new apsfilter 5.1.2 available (lpd/LPRng magic print filter)
Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 23:52:01 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

New apsfilter 5.1.2 is available for download

Master-Site:    http://www.FreeBSD.org/~andreas

Have fun

        Andreas  ///

#       $Id: ANNOUNCE,v 1.13 1999/06/12 16:23:33 andreas Exp $

New features in 5.1.2
=====================

- - write an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        if you are satisfied with apsfilter.
        You'll get a mail in return so that you can write me a
        postcard, if you like. I hope, this file increases soon ;-)

- - SETUP: prints time to compute and time to print testpage
        writes times and driver informations into a log file,
        which is at any time browseable with the new 'v' (view)
        option in main manue.
        Allows you to choose the fastest driver, if you have
        several options.

- - SETUP: when selecting uniprint driver, then show uniprint
        driver and additionally, which uniprint driver you
        have choosen.

- - SETUP: Add a hint during installation, that FreeBSD's
        lpd needs a patch to allow sharing of a spooldir by
        several printers in /etc/printcap.
        This is only needed, when you add print printcap
        aliases like "high, medium, low", which allows you
        to select different print densities on the commandline
        without the nees, to reconfigure the printer via
        apsfilterrc settings. See INSTALL file, what's additional
        needed.

- - apsfilter: use PAPERSIZE information when printing with uniprint
        drivers. PAPERSIZE variable has been missing in PRINT_PS
        command.

- - apsfilter: ghostscripts error messages when printing PS files
        are now redirected with a somple PS file ((redir_gs_msg.ps)
        which has been appended to the PRINT_PS command.
        Thanks to Andreas Reuter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
        for this nice contribution.

- - apsfilter: make use of psutils package, to print 2 pages on one page
        So "two pages on one" feature is now available for every file
        type, before it has been a special feature of a2ps and so was
        restricted to printing ASCII documents. Configurable via
        apsfilterrc config file.

New features in 5.1.1
=====================

- - bugfix release
  apsfilter did work correctly, but defaulted to 300dpi print
  resolution not only for dvips commandline options, the whole
  PRINT_PS command defaulted to 300dpi, if resolution hasn't
  been set during SETUP or afterwards via GS_RESOL in one of
  the apsfilterrc config files...

New features in 5.1.0
=====================

- - print in different print resolutions
        lpr -Plow test.ps       (180dpi)
        lpr -Pmed test.ps       (360dpi)
        lpr -Phigh test.ps      (720dpi)
  this has to be configured _manually_ after installing a printer
  using SETUP. Of course you can use different names and configure
  different print resolutions.
  At the end of the INSTALL file you get detailled instruction
  how to setup this.

- - Enhanced file type support
        o BMP
        o FAX G3
        o troff

- - Andreas Reuter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> contributed a
  nice postscript testpage for apsfilter.

- - nice suggestions and bugfixes from Debian
  especially support for a2ps 4.12
  thanks to Matej Vela <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

- - printer type dependend apsfilter setup files possible (just for
  the case somebody needs it). Now the following customization files
  are possible, precedence in that order:
        - /etc/apsfilterrc
        - /etc/apsfilterrc.${PRINTER}
        - $HOME/.apsfilterrc
        - $HOME/.apsfilterrc.${PRINTER}

- - ghostscript can make use of additional type1 fonts by setting the gs
  environment variable GS_FONTPATH. gs automatically recognizes
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 and
        /var/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
  if present. Other Paths can be configured global or printer type
  dependend by admin or user as usual. See precedence of apsfilterrc
  and .apsfilterrc files above.

- - CRLF translation and perforation skip for more HP models

- - new environment variable USE_RECODE_NOT_A2PS, so you can use
  reecode as an alternative over a2ps

- - new environment variable RECODE_OPTS
  defaults to "-q latin1:ibmpc"

- - new environment variable PAGES_REVERSE_ORDER for forcing dvips
  to print in reverse order

- - default printer resolution now defineable in apsfilter filter
  script name. This configuration is not covered by SETUP script
  and has to be dome manually.

- - Precedence of print resolution
        a) by name of filter script (symlink to apsfilter)
        b) by setting GS_RESOL in apsfilterrc config files
        c) autodetected by apsfilter (PS_xxx, printer driver name)

- - some dvips settings cleanup, use -Z only when resol >= 400dpi

- - when printing html use some sane defaults for HTML2PS_OPTS
  if not set in apsfilterrc files

- - and of course cosmetic and bugfixes

- - many thanks to the SuSE developement team especially
  Werner Fink <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for many inspirations

New features in 5.0.1
=====================

- - Really make it unnecessary to have a file command that is able to
  read from a pipe.

- - Added a russian print filter to the contrib section:
  Skliarouk Peter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote a filter for russian fonts
  for matrix 9-pin printers. It uses only ESC-consequences to
  transform chars to theirs graphics representations.

New features in 5.0.0
=====================

Nice enhancements from Joachim Achtzehnter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

- - LPRng support. Hurray !!!

- - Writes the first 8k of a print job into a tmp file for
  file type detection. This makes rewindstdin unnecessary
  for dvips as well as a special file command, that is able
  to read from stdin.

New features in 4.9.9 - patch-aa
================================

Uniprint support by Glenn Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Sorry, I had no time to role a new apsfilter
release, it was only available via patch-aa in the FreeBSD ports
collection. It's always a good idea to look there for new patches.

        http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/ports

New features in 4.9.9
=====================

Support recognition and printing of bzip2 compressed files

Upgrade and Bugfixes in 4.9.8
=============================

Support printing of PDF files !

Fix SETUP and mksymlinks script to fully support color printer.

Upgrade in 4.9.7
================

Do   4 Jun 1998 23:17:20 CEST   Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Added support for new HP DeskJet Driver in FreeBSD port of ghostscript 5.10
As a result apsfilters SETUP needs to know about the new printer drivers
See:
        http://bonk.ethz.ch/hp850/hp850.html
        http://bonk.ethz.ch/hp850/hp850-readme.1.3.html

If you want that for Linux as well, you have to patch the ghostscript
sources and to rebuild ghostscript 5.10. The URL's above contain
some (not complete) instructions how to do that.

For more hints you can browse through my diffs in the FreeBSD
ports collection.

Bugfixes in 4.9.6
=================

Fr  29 Mai 1998 00:04:35 CEST   Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
        *  From: Neil Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
           get rid of SPOOLDIR /usr/spool for Linux installations ...
           nearly all OS now use /var/spool ...
        *  apsfilter 4.9.6 released

Di  26 Mai 1998 21:10:11 CEST   Andreas Klemm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

        * From: Neil Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
        1. the script setup/compile refers to the directory a2ps-4.2-akl-new,
           but the source is actually in the directory a2ps-4.2-akl
        2. the script setup/compile doesn't invoke Makefile.linux, but
           instead simply defaults to use the (non-functional) Makefile
           in that directory
        3. the install_it script in the rewind-stdin directory has the
           line ''cp rewindstdin $BINDIR" commented out, so it never
           actually installs the program

New Goodies in 4.9.5
====================

o Support direct printing of HTML documents
  using html2ps

New Goodies in 4.9.4
====================

o Absolutely new SETUP:
        - view your gs binaries compiled in drivers (gs -h)
        - browse through the devices.txt file
        - menue oriented
        - possibility to change print parameters and
          PRINT a TEST page as long as you like
        - saves the current SETUP environment settings in ./SETUP.cfg
          even if you have to terminate with ^C your settings are not lost !
        - SETUP reads old envireoment on starup if SETUP.cfg file is present
        - SETUP knows about all gs 5.10 drivers + 3rd party hp850 driver
        - enhanced serial printer setup in preparation
        - saves some interesting printer settings from SETUP
          at the end of /etc/apsfilterrc, so printer is ready for use,
          as tested !

o Bugfixes from SuSE developement team and other people.
o Supports FreeBSD ports collection
o Patches from FreeBSD ports collection included
o ghostscript 5.10 support
o hp850 driver support

o Still no support for LPRng !!!!
  Please use a standard (Berkeley) lpd package !!!!

Thomas Bueschgens
=================

Thomas Bueschgens isn't involved in the apsfilter developement
as co-author anymore. Don't try to send him mail.
Thomas, thanks for the good work in the past !

New Goodies in 4.9.3
====================

apsfilter 4.9.3 is apsfilter 4.9.1 for FreeBSD 2.1 in it's own
package format. This version is part of the FreeBSD installation
CD-Rom offered by Walnut Creeck.

Support for FreeBSD ports collection

Apsfilter is now more secure. You have to set INSECURE in /etc/apsfilterrc
as root first otherwise its not possible for users to use the
custom files $HOME/.apsfilterrc.

There is a new switch DVIPS_RESOL_DorP. Some dvips versions use the P
and some the D Option to change the printer resolution on the command line.
So if you have trouble printing TeX dvi files using dvips, check this one
first, please ! It defaults now to -D so it runs like a charm with
Thomas Essers teTeX-0.3 package ;-)

Nice Contribution:
okidisplay is for HPLJ compatible OKI 400ex. They have a programmable
display. Martin Kraemer ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has made a C Program,
that hacks the current print job into the display of the printer in the
following form: <job>:<user>@<host>
So you can see, what print job currently is active ;-)

WHAT IS APSFILTER
=================

Do you have the German Unix Magazine UnixOpen February 1995 handy ?
Yes ?! Then read the article about apsfilter "Jetzt wird Druck gemacht".

APSFILTER is a lineprinter input filter for systems with a BSD-like
printing mechanism (lpd, /etc/printcap), that saves users a lot of work
when printing different file types wether compressed or not !!!

Additionally it enables non Postscript printers, that are supported
by the free postscript emulator - under the terms of the GPL -
"ghostscript" (gs), to print postscript files automatically !

With the new apsfilter Version 3.0 its now possible to print
*compacted* documents directly without unpacking !!!
The wanted packers/unpackers have to be already installed on your system.

 o Supported packers:

        BZIP2, GZIP, PACK, COMPRESS, FREEZE/MELT

 o Supported file types:

        ASCII, BMP, DVI, Data (PCL,...), FIG, GIF, Group 3 FAX,
        HTML, JPEG, PBM, PDF, PostScript, PPM, Sun Raster,
        TIFF, troff, X11 Bitmap

Unix Platforms, that are able to run apsfilter flawlessly
=========================================================

        - FreeBSD 1.X
        - FreeBSD 2.X
        - FreeBSD 3.X
        - FreeBSD 4.X
        - NetBSD
        - OpenBSD
        - SUN SPARCSTATIONS, Solaris 1.1.1 (SunOS4) (when using
                another file command that can read from a pipe)
        - Many Linux Distributions
          But please use the supported lpd print daemon, not LPRng ;-)

        - and surely all commercial Unix Systems,
          that run a BSD 4.X operating system

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION
========================
Matthew Feldt, Chair of the St. Louis Unix Users Group - Linux SIG,
will describe extending the functionality of the Apache web server to
include: server-side scripting for HTML documents with PHP; database
connectivity to MySQL; Java Servlets with Apache JServ and Sun's Java
Servlet Development Kit; and searching with ht://Dig.

These open source tools allow you to create powerful and dynamic
web sites suitable for e-commerce or personal enjoyment. Matthew will
describe installation, basic configuration and provide simple examples
to get you primed for using the tools yourself.

The Number One HTTP Server On The Internet
http://www.apache.org

MySQL is a true multi-user, multi-threaded SQL database server.
http://www.mysql.org

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language.
http://www.php.net

Sun Microsystems Java Development Kit
http://java.sun.com

The Java Servlet API is a Standard Extension to the Java platform that
provides web application developers with a simple consistent mechanism
for extending the functionality of a web server. A servlet can almost
be thought of as an applet that runs on the server side -- without a face.
http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/index.html

Apache JServ is a 100% pure Java servlet engine fully compliant with
the JavaSoft Java Servlet APIs 2.0 specification.

The ht://Dig system is a complete world wide web indexing and searching
system for a small domain or intranet.
