I have patched util-linux-2.9r so that "login" will generate and use
BLOWFISH-encrypted home directories. This patch will only work with 2.2
kernels that have been patched with the strong encryption patches available
on www.kerneli.org.
You could use it to keep your home directory encrypted when you're not
logged in. When you log in, your directory is automagically decrypted.
When you logout, your home directory, and the files in it, are encrypted
again. If you're running linux on a laptop, and the laptop gets stolen,
your files can't be read.
This is *alpha* software. It no doubt contains bugs, more bugs, and yet
more bugs. Use it at your own risk. The author accepts no responsibility
for loss of your precious data. If you're not comfortable patching critical
system programs, this probably isn't for you. You should be comfortable with
loop devices before making use of this patch.

PPDD is an encrypted device driver for Linux. It creates a device
which looks like a disc partition on which you can then create an ext2
filesystem.
The underlying data storage can be a file on a normal filesystem or a
complete disc partition. All data written to this file or partition is
encrypted using the blowfish algorithm.
Special emphasis in the design has been placed on the fact that data
on disc has a long lifetime and that encrypted backups may fall into
the wrong hands.
The use of master/working pass phrases and the ability to enter very
long pass phrases on two lines adds to the security.
The driver concept also allows the root filesystem and the swap device
to be encrypted. In effect this means that with the exception of a
kernel and a small initial read-only ram-disc image, everything on
disc is encrypted.
The latest revision is 0.9 and supports the late 2.0 series and the
early 2.2 series of Linux kernels up to 2.2.9.
It has been designed so that anyone with reasonable Linux competence
can install and use it.
So far only the Intel-86 architecture is supported.

As some of you have probably noticed, TSX-11.MIT.EDU is currently off
the air. TSX-11's hardware had been getting old, and it had been
showing its age more and more. Since I could see the writing on the
wall, I had ordered new hardware, but unfortunately the current hardware
(perhaps aware that it was about to be replaced) decided to permanently
die before the replacement hardware could arrive.
Hence, it may be a few days to a week before I can get the new hardware
installed and TSX-11 back on the air. The good news is that once TSX-11
is replaced, it will have substantially more horsepower and much more
disk space, which will help our ability to make TSX-11 even better than
it was before!

RG Studio and the Polish Linux Users Group (PLUG) organize the second
Warsaw Autumn Linux Workshop conference. The conference will take place
in Warsaw, Poland, on October 21-23 1999.
The first Workshop took place October 22-24, 1998. Over 140 people
attended, many interesting presentations were given. The main conference
sponsor was Informix Software. The Workshop was also sponsored by: RG
Studio, Casinos Poland, The Stefan Batory Foundation. Media coverage:

The 1998 event was a great success. We would like it to be even better
and bigger this year.
Authors are invited to submit papers and presentations.
