The install CDROMs include an El Torito boot record, which, on supported hardware make them bootable. The Red Hat 6.0 CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the Red Hat updates to that time on the CD. Rather than having them in a separate updates directory, we have opted to make them part of the install, so you automatically have an up-to-date Linux system. A large amount of extra software has been included on the CDROM, including Corel WordPerfect (downloadable version) and Sun JDK 1.1.7 (for the programmers out there). Also now included are xawtv and alevt (for bttv-based TV cards), VNC and SSH 1.2.27. A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Red Hat Linux is just too big now to have all the binaries and sources on the one CD. This CD is also available, also for UKP 3.00. The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD distribution. The Mandrake CDs are based on the official ISOs. However, since the official ISO doesn't appear to be bootable, we've remade it so it does boot. For more information, and how to order, please visit the web page at: http://www.amush.cx/linux/ International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and international mail, the prices will be slightly higher. Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!) and cheques drawn on a UK bank. International bank transfers accepted, however subject to a UKP 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a UKP 1.50 charge for postage and packaging within the UK, variable for international customers. - -- Michael "Soruk" McConnell Eridani Star System -- The Most Up-to-Date Red Hat Linux CDROMs Available Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.amush.cx/linux/ Fax: +44-8701-600807 - -- This article has been digitally signed by the moderator, using PGP. http://www.iki.fi/mjr/cola-public-key.asc has PGP key for validating signature. Based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, Storm Linux is designed to be easy to use and simple to install. Its target market includes both the server and the desktop. Depending on the installation choices, a new user can be running Storm Linux in as little as fifteen minutes. The alpha version of Storm Linux was released earlier this month. The first production version is expected in the fourth quarter of 1999. For administrators, a key feature of Storm Linux is the Storm Administration System (SAS). Designed for both local and secure remote administration, SAS features a single code base for all administration modules. By separating the application from the client interface, SAS improves remote connectivity and allows for the quick creation of graphical and text interfaces. For end-users, Storm Linux includes a choice of text-based or graphical X Window System installation, automatic or custom disk partitioning, KDE or GNOME desktops, and recent versions of popular text and X Window System programs, including XFree86 3.3.3.1, enlightenment 0.15.5, apt 3.7, and Netscape 4.6. Stormix Technologies was founded in February 1999 with the goal of providing the tools and applications that Linux needs to enter new markets. Initial investors include David Talmor, NetNation Communications Chairman and CEO, and Joseph Kibur, NetNation Communications COO. "After using the Linux operating system to build a world class web-site hosting service, we were convinced that Linux has huge potential," Mr. Talmor says. "As a result, we decided to establish a new company that focused specifically on the creation of a powerful and user-friendly distribution of the operating system. That distribution is Storm Linux." Stormix Technologies is an independent company, and not directly affiliated with NetNation Communications. About the Speakers: R Garth Wood, Lead Developer Mr Wood attends the University of Waterloo where he studies applied mathematics and computer science. Mr Wood is currently on a work term with Stormix Technologies. His work with Stormix comprises of language design, development of the hardware detection system, development of a network daemon and general distribution and development stewardship. In his spare time Mr Wood is an Official Debian developer and also works on his own object-oriented, fully-threaded, realtime, message-based language. Kevin Lindsay, Project Leader Mr Lindsay has been involved in programming for almost a decade. He discovered Linux in 1993 and it quickly became his operating system of choice both for work and for play. Mr Lindsay is the maintainer and original author of both Secure Locate (slocate) and Backup Copy. slocate is the default "locate" for RedHat 6.0 . It will also be in the upcoming release of Debian. No-Host Dinner You can also meet the speakers at a no-host dinner before the talk. Meet us at 6:00 PM at Earl's, 4361 Kingsway in Burnaby. All are welcome, but please let me know if you plan to join us so I can ask for a table of appropriate size. It will display all fonts present in the chosen directory in a list, with a preview of the font in the main window. You can get the latest version (0.3) from http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Foothills/1458 It also allows you to display a particular character or string of a font in an own window, thus allowing a comparison between several fonts with a particular string sample. This character or string can be antialiased (smoothed). The string can also consider the kerning pairs if available in the AFM or TTF file. The displayed character or string can be saved in GIF format. A table with all glyphs in the font (for PostScript Type 1 fonts also several encodings) can also be created. A custom encoding will be generated on the fly to allow you to see all characters (also not encoded ones) in a Type 1 font. Clicking on each glyph of the table will open a popup window magnifying the glyph. The magnifying factor depends on the mouse button clicked. You can also print a sample of a font. The program generates PostScript code with sample strings in several sizes, which you can download to any PostScript printer or to ghostscript. In the case of TT fonts, the font is downloaded as Type42, which means that if you use a Postscript printer, it must be at least a Level 2 printer and also have Type42 support. ghostscript understands the format beginning with version 5.10. The program can also print a longer text in the selected font, thus allowing you to get an impresion of how a text page looks like in the selected font. It has been available for free public release since 1996 and has been used in commercial products, research projects, and for teaching. Ensemble provides a library of protocols that can be used for quickly building complex distributed applications. A simple way to see what Ensemble does is to try out the "ensemble" demonstration program (included in the distribution). You can run several instances of this program and see them find each other and allow you to send messages back and forth, detect failures, etc.... For more information, see the tutorial (tut.ps). When using Ensemble as a library, an application registers 10 or so event handlers with Ensemble, and then the Ensemble protocols handle the details of reliably sending and receiving messages, transferring state, implementing security, detecting failures, and managing reconfigurations in the system. The source distribution includes interfaces to numerous languages. For this RPM, we include only: the C library and header files (the "HOT" interface), the C++ library (the "Maestro" interface), several system executables and demo programs, and the documentation (split into a tutorial and reference manual). The binary RPM version of this software includes the Objective Caml run-time system, which is copyright 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 INRIA. However, Objective CAML is not needed in order to use these libraries and programs. - -- This article has been digitally signed by the moderator, using PGP. http://www.iki.fi/mjr/cola-public-key.asc has PGP key for validating signature. The Linux soundapps page contains more than 550 various audio, MIDI, and DSP links, making it by far the most complete listing of such software available on the Web. By popular request a single-page format is now available again. The pages can be accessed here: http://sunsite.univie.ac.at/Linux-soundapp/ here: http://sound.condorow.net here: http://www.ymo.org/linuxsound/ and here: http://www.bright.net/~dlphilp/linuxsound/ As always, please use the mirrors first, since my ISP (Bright.net) imposes a daily transfer limit of 35 MB.
