If you use your laptop in more than one network, you need alternative IP
configuration for each network. Plus, you will probably need to edit
/etc/resolv.conf and change your http proxy settings in Netscape.

Many people, faced with problem, choose one of these:

  1. write a shell script for each site that calls ifconfig and route
  2. write a perl script that pings a few known sites
  3. use someone else's perl script that pings a few known sites

This is slow and ugly. divine is a much better solution for this
problem.

divine uses libpcap to capture packets, not parse the ping output, and
not even rely on ping to exist, and it uses libnet to send fake ARP
requests. Thus, the core is very portable yet small (the binary is 28k
on my system) and does not need a bulky perl interpreter.

You can put divine in your PCMCIA startup script (the man page documents
how to do this) and have it find out and set your IP configuration
automatically.

Unless some perl scripts using ping, divine will actually time out after
4 seconds, re-sending the ARP requests 3 times before doing so, and
leaving the interface in a deterministic state when failing to detect
the network settings.

divine will

  1. set the IP number and netmask
  2. set the default gateway
  3. symlink resolv.conf
  4. set /etc/proxy
a perl script that editors your netscape 4 preferences according to
     this file is included
  5. run an optional shell script
this can be used to set up additional routes, edit /etc/printcap,
edit /etc/issue (this is tres cool, btw!)
  6. echo which configuration it found and what commands it executed

In short, divine has become an invaluable help for me, and I hope it
will help other laptop users, too.

Felix

MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Sat., 31 July 1999, 13:00 to 15:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

1. The July meeting is scheduled be held SATURDAY, 31 July 1999
13:00-15:00 -- It will be an INSTALLFEST, at the LanShark
facility -- see: http://linux.lanshark.com/

We've received a lot of `free' and low price CD's over
the last month -- GPL RedHat 60; a NFR `TurboCluster 1.2'
from Pacific HiTech; a KRUD 6.0 [Kevin's Really Uber
Distribution -- see: http://www.tummy.com/krud/ ]. We'll
try to order in fresh Debian, Caldera, Slackware, and SUSE
for the occasion.

Pick up an 8-Gig IDE drive at Staples, and you too can
have a multi-boot, multi-distribution wonder box. Bring a
a chassis with a 10-base-T NIC and cable to jack into the
hub of a central server -- We may do a couple of `rsync'
fast installs, as well.

2. There'll, no doubt, be a smattering of local `experts' to
offer their thoughts for `general install Q and A's, describing
varied techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level
problem solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat'
in the sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

3. Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the installations.

As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
content are subject to change.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

HI!

I would like to announce a new beta release of my package pyCA, a set of
scripts and CGI-BIN programs written in Python for setting up and
running a certificate authority using OpenSSL.

See

  http://sites.inka.de/ms/python/pyca/

for more details.

I would like to ask for feedback of people using this package. Any hints
for improving this package are appreciated. I do not have the
possibility to test this software under other Unix environments than
Linux, OpenLDAP and ApacheSSL.

Changes since 0.5.3:
* Minor bugfixes
* Small enhancements in user interface of CGI-BINs
* Restrictive ownership/permissions setting of files/directories
  in ca-make.py
* Some small handy scripts for doing boring copying of CA certs

Ciao, Michael.

=============
RRDtool 1.0.0

  http://ee-staff.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/ (Europe)
  http://www.caida.org/Tools/RRDtool/ (US)

If you use/like MRTG, check out RRDtool. It is basically the
time-series graphing and data storage/management component of
MRTG, broken out and `done right'.

`done right' means that RRDtool is magnitudes faster than MRTG
                                   and extremely configurable.

RRD is the Acronym for Round Robin Database Tool. RRDtool is a
system to store and display time-series data (i.e. network
bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server load average).

RRDtool stores the data in a very compact way that will not expand
over time, and it can produce useful graphs based on this data.

RRDtool can be used either via simple wrapper scripts (from shell
or Perl) or via frontends that poll network devices and put a
friendly user interface on it.

RRDtool should run on most reasonable unices (it has even been
observed to compile on NT). Feedback/experiences to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RRDtool comes with a GNU license. Check:

        http://www.caida.org/Tools/RRDtool/license.html

RRDtool development was in part sponsored by CAIDA, the
Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (www.caida.org)
in San Diego, CA

Cheers
tobi

Subject: autoproject 0.2.0 - create a skeleton source package for a new program
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 19:47:07 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

autoproject interviews the user, then creates a source package for a
new program which follows the GNU programming standards. The new
package uses autoconf to configure itself, and automake to create the
Makefile. `make distcheck' succeeds.

The idea is that you execute autoproject just once when you start a
new project. It will ask a few questions, then create a new directory
and populate it with standard files, customized for the new project.

The version number for the new program is initialized as 0.1.0, and is
set in configure.in. It is available in C programs as the macro
VERSION, and in the Makefile as $(VERSION).

Optionally, the new package will use a command line parser generator.
Currently, autoproject supports two parser generators:
clig by Harald Kirsch <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
                (see http://wsd.iitb.fhg.de/software/)
autogen by Bruce Korb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
                (see ftp://autogen.linuxbox.com/pub/)

I would like to support graphical user interface (GUI) as well as
command line interface (CLI) programs, but I have very little
experience with them. Contributions would be welcome.

autoproject 0.2.0 is the initial release.

autoproject may be download from here:
        http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt/
        ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/devel

autoproject is distributed under the GNU General Public License.

Subject: The Linux Console Tools 0.2.1
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 20:01:48 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Stable release 0.2.1 of the Linux Console Tools is now available from
http://www.multimania.com/ydirson/soft/lct/.

Here are the release informations:

This is release 0.2.1 of the Linux console-tools.

This release is a bugfix release for 0.2.0, and includes czech
 messages. See ChangeLog for details.

0.2.0 is the first of a stable branch. The data files (keymaps,
fonts and tables) formerly part of this package have been moved to a
 new console-data package.

The few new features include full gettext i18n, iso-8859-15 support,
and several small bug fixes. The 0.2.x branch will only get bug fixes
and critically missing features - all development will be done on the
 still-to-come 0.3.x branch.

PLEASE NOTE that this release has not yet support for the CP
fontfile format back yet. It has been integrated in development
 version 0.3.0.

This package is currently under development, use it at your own risks.
However, it should already be a good replacement for `kbd', and you
might like the features not found in the latter, but (as usual) you
have NO WARANTY of any kind.

Some interface-level features are still liable to change (program names,
option names, etc.).

Much work is needed to really get Unicode stuff usable. This will be
one of my primary goals. It will probably imply hacking the kernel as
well for some features, but the kernel-part is being thoroughly
rewritten by the GGI project, so don't hold you breath...

This package is based on `kbd-0.94', and is mostly up to date with
0.99, of which it corrects some bugs, and to which it adds several
features (Message i18n, Screen-font-map fallback tables, 16-bit
Application-Charset Maps (also called "console maps" or "screen
maps"), can now output PSF files and use "-" to read/write most files
to stdin/stdout, can make use of the G1 charset slot, etc.).

Please send all bug reports, suggestions, or anything else to myself,
(but take a look at the "TODO" file first), feedback will be greatly
appreciated.

Please get in touch with me before starting to modify this package, to
prevent duplicated work - it's enough work to keep in sync with new
kbd releases until we merge; as this code is expected to evolve quite
rapidly, it would also be helpful that not too many persons work on
the same pieces of code at the same time, to ease integration.
