Two Free Java Seminars At Warp Expo West

For Linux developers who write Java programs and are interested in
cross-platform compatibility, two free Java lectures will be held in
Southern California on Saturday, September 18.

"Java Introduction" is for programmers who are new to Java. Topics
covered will include basic Java language concepts, applications vs.
applets, Java Development Kit (JDK) issues, Java tools and Java
resources. Contrasts between Java versions and new Java2 features will
also be briefly covered. Attendees will learn all the information
necessary to start developing Java applications.

"Java In the Real World" will cover some of the practical issues faced
in developing real solutions using Java. Topics will include
performance, tools options, design decisions and product packaging. The
presenter will cover the lessons he learned during development of
server-based Java applications, and will also speak on his experiences
at this year's JavaOne Conference.

The presenter is Ron Lamb, a Software Developer for Cisco Systems.

These presentations are part of Warp Expo West, a free series of
computer-oriented lectures at the Chapman Conference Facilities near
Disneyland in Southern California.

The appropriate urls are as follows:

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

HI!

I want to announce a new version of ldap-client-cgi.py, a
WWW-LDAP-Gateway written in Python (you might have guessed it).

It's available for free (GPL) from

  http://sites.inka.de/ms/python/ldap-client-cgi/

I would like to encourage people to give feedback about the usability
of this program. And I would like to know about public LDAP servers with
good directory trees which allow public testing of LDAP clients.
(memberdir.netscape.com, ldap.infospace.com and directory.verisign.com
all suck!)

Ciao, Michael.

Changes since 0.4.1
- - security fix! (forgot METHOD-parameter in a <FORM>-tag)
- - small fixes in user interface

Subject: The Linux Console Tools 0.3.1 available
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 18:50:33 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Development release 0.3.1 of the Linux Console Tools is now available
from http://www.multimania.com/ydirson/soft/lct/. It has NOT been
uploaded to metalab, where only stable release will go.

Here are the release informations:

This is release 0.3.1 of the Linux console-tools.

This development release adds support for reading X11 BDF font
files, adds a feature to showcfont that helps debugging fonts and
SFM's, provides russian, czech, and german messages catalogs.

A bunch of bugs have been fixed. The know bugs status is now online
 at:
         http://www.multimania.com/ydirson/en/lct/bugs.html

We still need developers, and TRANSLATORS for message localization
(l10n). Please have a look to the WWW pages for a list of tasks, at:
among which l10n tasks are, at:
        http://www.multimania.com/ydirson/en/lct/needed.html
        http://www.multimania.com/ydirson/en/lct/l10n.html

This package is currently under development, use it at your own risks.
However, it should already be a good replacement for `kbd', and you
might like the features not found in the latter, but (as usual) you
have NO WARANTY of any kind.

Some interface-level features are still liable to change (program names,
option names, etc.).

Much work is still needed to really get Unicode stuff usable. Some
people have started fixing problems and implementing missing features
in the kernel's console drivers for this. Such kernel patches are
included as (untested) contrib items.

This package is based on `kbd-0.94', and is mostly up to date with
0.99, of which it corrects some bugs, and to which it adds several
features (Message i18n, Screen-font-map fallback tables, 16-bit
Application-Charset Maps (also called "console maps" or "screen maps",
support of more font-file formats), can use "-" to read/write most
files to stdin/stdout, can make use of the G1 charset slot, etc.).

Please send all bug reports, suggestions, or anything else to myself,
(but take a look at the "TODO" file first), feedback will be greatly
appreciated.

Please get in touch with me before starting to modify this package, to
prevent duplicated work - it's enough work to keep in sync with new
kbd releases until we merge; as this code is expected to evolve quite
rapidly, it would also be helpful that not too many persons work on
the same pieces of code at the same time, to ease integration.

MEETING NOTICE
==============

  Central Ohio Linux Users Group

            Wed., 25 August 1999, 19:00 to 21:00 local

Meeting Presentation
====================

  A potpourri of topics

1. Micro-printing -- `Books on Demand' -- Using Linux, tex,
PostScript, pdftex, and mpage, with a laser printer for
professional quality, `Perfect' bound, books * (Rick Hobert)

2. There'll, no doubt, be a smattering of local `experts' to
offer their thoughts for `general Q and A's, describing
varied techniques for `dog-licking-cat' Linux/unix high-level
problem solving in more newbie-friendly terms. [`dog-licking-cat'
in the sense that local gurus and wizards need to remember to carefully
explain their thought process in `solving' an issue -- to a `newbie'
saying `RTFM MAN 1 PASSWD' is pretty opaque, in solving their simple
question on `how do I change my password?'.]

3. Finally, and such as we ever have a `formal' business part of the
meeting, it will follow the presentations.

As always (both with the informal nature of the group's `management'
and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules), the agenda and
content are subject to change.

MEETING SITE:

Parking is FREE !

.... The group has met on the LAST Wednesday or LAST Saturday of a month,
alternating by month to allow more folks to mesh their schedules with
COLUG's. Sites and dates also depend on facility availabity, with
common-sense relocation in the holiday season.

The webpage always has a link to a map to the upcoming meeting site.

From: Winfried Truemper <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: New version of r2d2 - startup concept
Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 18:55:38 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

r2d2 is a startup-concept for Unix-like operating systems.
The design goal for r2d2 was to be a lot easier and more
flexible than existing startup concepts (BSD, SysV), while
staying fully compatible with known init-scripts.

Debian provides r2d2 as an alternative to the rc-script using
the package-pseudonym file-rc. So Debian users have the option
to use a somewhat cleaner startup setup, while staying fully
compatible with the default startup concept of their distribution.
The file /etc/runlevel.conf used by that version of r2d2 looks
like this:

# Format:
# <sort> <off-> <on-levels>     <command>
05 - 1 /etc/init.d/single
05 - S /etc/init.d/keymaps.sh
10 - 2,3,4,5 /etc/init.d/sysklogd

r2d2 just puts content where it belongs: into a configuration file (and
not into the filenames of 500 symbolic links). In other words: the fact
that the SysV way stores content in filenames should be considered a
perverse geekish joke, accidentally taken for serious after a while.

A quick complexity analysis reveals, that even other part of the SysV
startup concept can be removed without loosing anything but complexity.
For some very ancient slides on this, please see
http://www.guug.de/~winni/linux/guug/ffg_98.ps.gz.

There is really no point in having dozens of shell-scripts calling each
other to fullfill a basically very simple task: start a list of
applications (daemons, utitlities) upon startup or shutdown (or at other
points in time). Its easy and r2d2 tries to keep it easy (KISS).
Please spare arguments like "but we must stay compatible to unix", unless
you can show me a standard to be found on most Unix-systems or at least
one for Linux-distributions (hint: just save time by reading standard
books like "Essential System Administration" to learn on not less than 15
pages, that such a standard does not exists). r2d2 is "only" compatible to
init-scripts of the SysV-style, because there is nothing more to be
compatible with.

The final goal of r2d2 is to be integrated into init and have only one
configuration file left: /etc/init.conf. And maybe a few of those old
init-scripts survive for compatibility reasons, but thats all. For a more
detailed discussion, read http://www.guug.de/lists/r2d2/msg00012.html.

The most recent implementation of r2d2 was done as a shell-script
to be able to discuss and change the interface quickly. The (new)
features are:

        * Provides both, start-stop or on-off philosophy for daemons
on a per-entry basis (start-stop is equivalent to "do not
try to be intelligent about already started/stopped services
          - just start/stop it").

        * Single-step mode for debuging purposes including a "spawn
a shell" feature (yeah, similar to what Windows offers)

        * Does need fewer wrapper-scripts (execute directly instead).

        * Adding new services is done by sections, not by meaningless
and never standarized numbers. (Because the numbers are
meaningless, it was hardly possible to standarize them.)

The next step in evolution would be to migrate the features from r2d2 into
init itself and replace /etc/inittab with /etc/init.conf. There is nothing
exotic or dangerous about it. However, I'm currently missing the time to
do that myself, but probably somebody else is interested into.

r2d2 resides on ftp://ftp.guug.de/pub/members/truemper/r2d2/

LOMAC v0.2 - Low Water-Mark Mandatory Access Control for Linux

The LOMAC Loadable Kernel Module is a security enhancement for Linux
that uses Low Water-Mark Mandatory Access Control to protect the
integrity of processes and data from viruses, Trojan horses, and
malicious remote users. LOMAC is implemented as a loadable kernel
module - no kernel recompilations or changes to standard applications
are required to use LOMAC. Version 0.2 of the prototype is now
available for download under the GPL from

                 ftp://ftp.tislabs.com/pub/lomac .

The major improvements over the previous version include:

o Compatibility with both the 2.0 and 2.2 series of Linux kernels.
o Demotion problems with shell pipelines eliminated.
  o Increased stability.

Despite these improvements, the LOMAC prototype is still only
partially complete, and should be used for experimental purposes only
at this time.

###################################################
## WELCOME to PERFECT PITCH (Version 0.3)
###################################################

Perfect pitch is a simple ear training program for Linux under GPL.
You can exercise the recogniton of intervalls, chords and scales.

Perfect pitch requires the installation of Perl (Version 5),
Perl::Tk, Perl::MIDI and an extermal MIDI player, like timidity
(Verion 0.2i). Perfect pitch is written in Perl, uses Perl::Tk
for the user interface, Perl::MIDI to write MIDI files and timidity
to play these files. It is easy to substitute timidity with any
other MIDI player. You just have to edit the variable
$play_midi_file_command.

####################################################
GENERAL

This is an alpha release, which means that there are a number of
features which are not implemented. But perfect pitch works pretty
fine on my Pentium 90 with Suse Linux (Version 6.1).

see http://www.forwiss.de/~msnutt/sound/perfectpitch/ for more
information

Cheers Matthias
