There is (was) some documentation about how the extended-2 filesystem
works...  yes, it's still on sunsite:

Dated August'95, but still full of some good stuff.

There's also a bunch of docs in the e2fsprogs package itself, also to be
found in the same directory:

e2fsprogs-1.06.tar.gz
