The problem occurs because of libc5-glibc6 conflicts... SO4.03 was compiled
using libc5 and RH5.1 is a glibc6 system.

If you had read the pdf/html files that come along with SO, then you would
already know that this is a known problem that you would run into.

There is a solution.

In the contrib subdirectories at ftp.redhat.com you'll find an rpm called
"staroffice-wrapper". By using this, installing SO4.03 onto my own RH5.1
system (and then using it) was made very simple.

There are also some web pages around the net that describe how to do it
manually. (But the rpm automated the entire process and it worked
flawlessly).

But after all the hassles of installing it I was very quickly
disappointed... it *still* doesn't understand word-8 (office-97) files, and
this is the standard word-file format used all over the campus here :-(
(It also doesn't understand excel files from m$o97 either).

Good news is that the latest Applixware can understand m$o97, so I'll be
taking the boss out for a "liquid lunch" very soon to try to talk him into
getting it for us...  :)

Cheers                                                         .
