I haven't try to do so before a few seconds ago, and I cannot do it as
well. However, if this occurs only once you might consider to misuse TeX a
little bit. By having the \marginpar statement after the eqnarray
environment. To avoid that the margin is below your equations you could
adjust it with
\marginpar{\vspace -1.2cm}your text}. I know it is not a very nice solution
but it works if you needn't to use it often (more than once). I recommend
to check the position of your margin text before you print your final
no-more-changes version.
You might also find a sound alternative in the AMS package, but I am not
sure about that.
