I'm not aware of anything that behaves as you've described, but the
functionality is there in most editors under Linux (e.g., vi, emacs,
pico etc.).

Also, some (like emacs) can probably be configured to behave the way
you want. It's quite possible that someone's already done it, in fact,
but not being part of the emacs world, I couldn't say...
