So what exactly is the problem? When you say "crashed hard", what
exactly do you mean? Do it lock the screen? Does it still respond
to the keyboard? Does ctrl-alt-backspace work? If it's networked,
can you log on remotely? If so, try "chvt 1" or "open bash". What
video card are you using? Is /usr/X11/bin/X pointing to the right
X server for your card? Did Xconfigurator run OK? Does your XF86Config
file look OK? Try running XF86Setup instead of Xconfigurator (I've
found it gives better results).
