KDE actually stole it from other window managers that had implemented
it first. It originally came from NeXTstep, and hence found its way
into AfterStep and Window Maker. I think Enlightenment may have it,
too.
Personally, I think it's a visually unpleasant feature, and iconizing
the window is much cleaner, and leaves less clutter on the desktop.
Virtually every major window manager supports iconizing...
