HOWEVER, if you happen to have oldish hand scanner, SANE will not work.
You'd better to use pbmscan then which is unfortunately (or fortunately,
depending what you prefer) command line program without GUI.
It wouldn't be a big thing to write hand scanner support backend for
SANE for the existing hand scanner drivers (Genius, Logitech, ...).
Volunteers needed.
