I don't know about this, but

Yes, you can. I installed Applixware 4.4.1 one week ago, mainly to use the
spreadsheet. "applixware" on the command line fires a window including all
the applications, (no desktop), and "applixware -ss" just starts the
spreadsheet. I haven't tried it what option you need for the word
processor but it is in the help files.
