C Compiler problems?

I am trying to install a few programs and when I type ./configure, I get
this in return....

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc   ) works.... no
configure: error:  installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create exexcutables .

I am running RH 5.2.  Can anyone help?  Just tell me what to do and I'll
do it.
