if smbclient works when you try to connect to your windows-share, then
you've got some problems with your smb(u)mount utilities.

Try to either reinstall samba-2.x from rpm (if you use redhat or the like).

Remember that the kernel interface to samba changed from 2.0.x to 2.2.x
kernel series. If you have the old smbfs package installed, and is running a
2.2.x-kernel, you will get problems.

If none of this seems to be the root of your problem, check permissions and
the syntax you use for smb(u)mount....
