There is 2d CAD, but I don't know of any 3D packages, although that
doesn't mean there aren't any.

Yes, you use a NULL modem cable. But you REALLY don't want to.
Serial port's max out at 115.2 Kbps per second. You can get maybe
1.5Mbps over a PLIP (Parallel "NULL modem" cable), but it uses up your
parralel ports, and still isn't very fast. Ethernet is cheap, and fast.
