You might be best off to change the design slightly,
because having such a large directory is usually very
slow, even if it is possible to do.  One commonly
used technique is to have a second level in between,
so perhaps all files whose names begin with "a" would
be in the "a" subdirectory of the parent, rather than
in the parent itself.  Similarly for "b", and so on.
