You are right, I use "/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100" in inittab.  Does 
this option mean 8E1?  I tried 9600 8N1, doesn't work.

for the 8-apr patch, I cannot get the bootldr prompt, it just give me some 
code like this:

U3
@00000318
FDABT
00000618
777F7777  (This line changes from boot to boot)
----------------

The config.local.mk file is:
CONFIG_BIG_KERNEL=y
LINUX_DIR= ...
ARM_LIB_DIR= ...
LIBZ_INCLUDE_DIR= ...
LIBZ_LIB_DIR= ...
