The relevant portion of the transcript from /proc/kmsg says:
register_serial():autoconfig failed
serial_cs: register_serial() at 0xf60002e8, irq 98 failed.

That's all. I added a -v to cardmgr startup opts, but it
did not create any additional info.

Do IRQs need to be shared?? The card is a 10/100 + 56K modem.

(another strange thing: cardctl ident reports the card as
function 2: Serial... Shouldn't it be a multifunction card??)

Are any kernel messages issued when you insert the card?  What about
cardmgr debug messages (you probably need to change your syslog
configuration to display these, or kill of syslogd).

Err, if its 100base, then there is no way it could be NE2000.
