Thanks to everybody who replied to me.
My problem wasn't that I didn't uncompress the patches (I used "gzip
-cd patch-2.2.x.gz | patch -p0" instead of your proposals), but that I
thought I could just patch the original 2.2.0 source with the patches
for ARM Linux. Now I've learnt that I have to patch with the official
2.2.x patches first, and finally with the ARM patches. Hm. :-}

I'll fetch the patches now and try my luck.
