Thanks to all for all the prompt replies. The real problem seems
to be the color depth of the display - as suggested by some of the
members of the list.  I will try out combinations during the weekend
and post a report to the list later.

I am using 2.2.3  I haven't ported my own patch for a custom hardware
to >2.2.3 yet; thus th.
