This looks like another "brokenness" of RISC OS 4. If this is the case, then I am not going to even attempt to find out what's going on with RISC OS 4 and !Linux, since I shall take the view that RISC OS 4 is totally unsuitable, and suggest you upgrade to RISC OS 3.7 or 3.8 which actually works.
