...and that's required when writing SCHED_FIFO apps for
Linux/lowlatency as well, so it's not really to be considered a cost
IMHO.

Actually, RTL not providing a POSIX style encapsulation of file
access (via a user space daemon in the other end of FIFOs and/or SHM
for example) can be seen as an advantage, as it's harder to
accidentally do things in the wrong place in the code, thus wrecking
the timing.
