In the States you can get a 1394 card for as low as $70-$80.  As for Linux
drivers, the *vast* majority of cards made these days are OHCI-compliant,
which means that all the different silicon implementations hold to the
same register-level interface.  This means that there is a Linux ohci1394
driver, and almost all cards just plain work (unless Mr. Manuf. screwed
up the silicon).
