There is a more general solution that has attracted wide support. (see below).

For compression (which seems to be the topic here) that uses WavPack.  In the 
latest release (WavPack 4.69 beta) nearly all the 'barriers' have been 
lifted, the one remaining one is for WavPack to pack/unpack CAF/PCM files 
(not that remote from packing/unpacking WAV/PCM files). That is 'on the 
table' and will hopefully be in the next release (see the paper below).
