That's funny from what I've seen about some other projects is that
autoconf/configure is pretty much SoP.  It wasn't until I bumped into
ardour and JACK that I found the autogen.sh.  Okeydokey, I'll start
using autogen.sh instead.

I think it just depends on the audience you're trying to reach.
Configure scripts make things a bit easier (especially with CVS only
software), and if you can make things a bit easier, you might reach a
wider audience than you normally would have.  Not everybody (even
Linux enthusiasts/users) have the time/patience/willpower to try and
figure out how to really install the package.  They just want to use
it.
