for Linux, PortAudio sits on top of OSS, ALSA and JACK (the last two in v19 only). it uses whatever those layers provide, and in turn provides a callback-driven API (though v19 also provides blocking i/o for reasons i don't fully agree with :). And of course on other platforms PortAudio sits on top of ASIO, CoreAudio, MME, and others. --p
