libao's ALSA device selection is pretty much correct - it uses "default" PCM if no device is specified, and other devices can be selected like so: ogg123 -d alsa09 -o dev:"hw:0,0" file.ogg Unfortunately the ALSA device selection syntax isn't documented in the manpage so I had to figure this out by code inspection and trial & error...
