seems like its something like:

char *tpath, *actual;

asprintf(&tpath, "%s/%s", cwd, path);
actual = realpath(tpath, NULL);
if (actual) {
        // whatever you want to do with the canonicalized absolute pathname.
        free(actual);
}
free(tpath);
