Ah. I was having the same problem earlier, when I compiled AWE 
support into the kernel instead of as a module. My kernel has the 
soundblaster part of the driver compiled in, and then loads the
AWE module after isapnp sets the ioports correctly. I believe
this works because when compiled into the kernel the AWE's ioports 
were not defined, and it would not load.

Try that out, see if it works
