If you are talking about the SB PCI128, it's a mixed bag. The chipset
is actually made by Ensoniq -- recently bought out by Creative Labs.
I've bought probably 4 or 5 of these things to use in building new
(Windoze) machines and had pretty good luck with them there.

I also tried to put one in my daughter's 486/120 PCI box and could not
get it to work right -- loud static in all D>A output. Tried everything,
switching slots, new drivers, changing interrupts for everything else
in the box, even tried downgrading from Win98 to Win95. Finally called
CL tech support. After waiting on hold for 30 minutes and getting
disconnected once, their helpful answer was to buy a "Live!" card.
That kinda pissed me off. I put her old ALS100 card back in...

Anyway, it's a cheap card that seems to work well in new boxes (Celerons
in ABit or Gigabyte motherboards). I'd avoid putting it in anything
halfway old or exotic.

I've never tried to get the card working under Linux. Don't know if
it's supported or not. Have you checked /usr/src/linux/Documentation/?

HTH, at least a little...
