Cara,
Aconteceu isso comigo, e era o link /usr/src/linux que nao existia.
� s� dar o comando:
ln -s /usr/src/[diretorio do seu kernel] /usr/src/linux
A� tentar dar o ./configure de novo e seguir os passos normalmente.
Comigo funcionou, num Red Hat 7.3.

Como reza a lenda, manuais por toda internet dizem
para baixar o driver pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz , descompactar
e tal, a� chega uma parte que ele diz para dar o
comando "./configure -with-hal=pct789" a� acontece

Logo em seguida ele pede para dar o comando make e
ent�o aparece minha querida e conhecida mensagem de
erro:
make: *** Nenhum alvo indicado e nenhum arquivo make
encontrado. Pare.
O que diabos tenho que fazer, algu�m pode me ajudar???
No comando ./configure aparece uma mensagem no final
dizendo para eu configurar meu kernel primeiro, mas
configurar o que?? Como fa�o isso?? Lembrando, estou
no red hat 7.3 com um bendito modem pctel offboard
HSP56 com chipset pct789.
