Looks ugly but there are Athena clones which look much better
(Xaw3D / NeXtaw). You could use Athena and make this way sure the
programs works everywhere -- and have good appearance with systems
equipped with a clone library.

Lesstiff - free Motif clone. Quite much Motif compatible (if not fully) but
free.

I believe there's C++ interface for GTK too, called GTK--.
