There is a thorough discussion of daemon programming in the
book, "Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment" by W. R. Stevens.
It includes much source code, and fully worked out examples.
The code examples in the book may obtained by ftp from
ftp.uu.net in file published/books/stevens.advprog.tar.Z
