It's a little out of date, but here's the basic instructions.

If you are going to use SMP, I'd get the 2.2.3 source, if I were you. 
When you run the config script you'll be asked if you want to enable
SMP.

As for long filenames, choose the "vfat support" option.  Then you just
mount your 95/NT disks (including partitions) with the "-t vfat"
parameter.
