If you use Debian you only need to use i486-linuxlibc1-gcc instead of gcc.
i486-linuxlibc1-gcc is in a package called altgcc (and you need also
libc5-altdev installed). Debian release _every_ library for libc6
(default) and for libc5 (the -altdev ones). I compiled postgresql for
libc5 in my libc6 machine and it runs fine in old libc5 dists with the old
linker.
