The usual reason is that it doesn't include drivers for your
particular graphics chipset.

AFAIK, the only modes which are the same (at the hardware level)
regardless of chipset are 320x200x256 and 640x400x16, and below. 
Anything higher is specific to a particular graphics chipset.
