question

I am triyng to install a sound card driver on my linux system
but i can not find the way to make it work.i am not sure about the linking
and compiling process,plus i own an on-board motherboard(video and sound)
i do not know what drives should i use for sound or video(my xwindows does
not
work either),please somebody could explain  the whole process to me
