True, unless some files have been corrupted, although it doesn't sound
like it.

Hmm. I'm wondering if the problem is bad RAM. If the RAM is too slow
for the system, gcc seems to be the first thing to notice. That could
explain why rebooting fixes it.

If your BIOS has an option to slow down memory access, try that.
