Welcome to the weekly newsletter of the Linux Professional Institute(tm)! LPI is dedicated to providing a standardized, multi-national, and respected program to certify levels of individual expertise in Linux. Our goal is to design and deliver such a program from within the Linux community, using both volunteer and hired resources as necessary. We resolve to undertake a well considered, open, disciplined development process, leading directly to the establishment of a recognized and widely endorsed Linux certification body. ------------------------------------------------------------------ What's News? ------------ News from the Linux Business Expo / Comdex ------------------------------------------ Wow, what a busy week LPI had during LBE/Comdex. Besides a great meeting with our Advisory Council (AC), LPI was able to make some pretty exciting announcements during the show: - SGI signed on as a platinum level sponsor. At a press conference held on Wednesday, Roger Connolly, Director of SGI Global Education, presented the $50,000 check to Dan York, Chair of the LPI Board of Directors. http://www.lpi.org/pr/lpi-sgi-111799.html - We offically announced the release of our first test, T1a. http://www.lpi.org/pr/lpi-t1a-111799.html - Macmillan USA announced that they'd be publishing two books in Feb 2000 to help prepare students for the T1a exam. A formal press release from LPI is pending and will be at: http://www.lpi.org/pr/mcp-books-111599.html Our AC meeting included twenty-eight participants and provided a lot of valuable feedback concerning the future direction of LPI. Look for a more detailed accounting of the meeting in the near future. As always, we would never have been able to have such a great success without the hard work and dedication of everyone. Thanks so much to all those who volunteered their time and efforts. Also, special thanks go out to Caldera Systems, SGI, Enhanced Software Technology, Macmillan, McGraw-Hill, New Riders Publishing and VA Research. All of these companies generously provided gifts for us to distribute as prizes at LBE. News from Oracle OpenWorld 99 ----------------------------- In a Herculean effort, John Scroggins, Ray Ferrarri, Helen Boyle and Keith Pearson managed to coordinate and staff an LPI booth at Oracle's OpenWorld 99. Being at OpenWorld allowed us to get a chance to talk to a diverse base of potential certification consumers. John reports that traffice at the booth was good and interest in Linux in general appears to continue to rise. Thanks again to all those folks that helped out down in L.A. Happy Thanksgiving! ------------------- Everyone at LPI would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.
