If the only place this gets called is in file.c then you can drop the
above and make the function static.

Can "*pinode" ever be NULL here? If not, then it would be clearer to
pass in a "struct inode *" rather than a "struct inode **". If it can
be NULL, then the above is going to cause an oops.
