I believe you could also use a CLI override to the config file so you wouldn't actually have to change lvm.conf at all.

prompt> vgchange -cn <VG> --config 'global { locking_type = 3 }'

That should all be fine. clvmd is only needed to co-ordinate metadata
changes, and rebuilds its state when restarted.

Don't forget to change locking_type back when you've finished ;-)
