You can do a tar pipe via ssh, which may be a little slow, but you'll be
waiting in the tape drive anyway. You can say something like this...
tar -czpvv / - | ssh host2.domain.com -l root 'cat > /dev/tape'
Would tarball your entire file tree, dump that to stdout, which is piped
to ssh and encrypted to the other hosts, which is piped to cat and dumped
to /dev/tape. That is the easiest and most secure way to do it. Every
other way relies on hostname-based authentication which is very very bad.
