You need to stick a nameserver in your /etc/resolve.conf  and a few hosts maybe
to your /etc/hosts .
especially take a look at the /etc/resolve.conf that where your machine looks
for a nameserver. im not sure how IRIX does it, but in every unix ive used its
/etc/resolve.conf
