You need to run it thru a filter such as magicfilter or apsfilter.
Your /etc/printcap file will direct the ps file if you have it set
correctly.  For example, here is my printcap file:

lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
        :mx#0:\
        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :sh:
##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL epson 180x180 letter {} Epson24 Default {}

        :lp=/dev/lp1:\
        :if=/var/spool/lpd/ps/apsfilter-1.11:

I used printtool from the RedHat distribution to set it up.
My $PRINTER is set to epson so that I do not have to add parameters
to my lpr command line but it's the same as lpr -P epson.
